internal vital energy. It involves pressure on acupuncture points in
order to balance the body's energy and promote good health. The word
Shiatsu means simply 'finger pressure' but pressure can also be applied
with other parts of the hand as well as the elbows, knees and feet.
It
is a unique combination of classical oriental medical theory and a rich
living tradition of folk medicine. Based on the observation that the
body and mind are interrelated and function as one. It is understood
that life energy known as Ki flows through the body along a network of
non-physical pathways or channels known as Meridians. The fundamental
idea of Shiatsu being that good health is dependent on freely flowing
and balanced life energy.
Each Meridian is linked to an
organ or psycho-physical function and its Ki can be located at certain
points along its path, these are the acupuncture points known as tsubos.
Shiatsu's strength is as a preventative therapy and is particularly effective when used in conjunction with diet and life style.
Given regularly Shiatsu will build and strengthen the body and continually help it to heal itself.
